The Vancouver Canucks have a couple of things to be thankful for after tonight’s win over the Los Angeles Kings. Top of the list is that they’re thankful for the stellar play of Roberto Luongo, who had a brilliant glove save in the second period and stopped 32 of 33 shots, all while looking like the potential Team Canada netminder we all know he can be.

Contributions from their role players is another thing the Canucks faithful can be thankful for, as Tanner Glass has continued to quietly put together a strong season, notching his third goal of the year.

They’ve also got to be thankful for the end to a couple of streaks. Alex Burrows managed to break a 6 game goalless streak, bulging the twine in the first period and adding an assist.

And of course, there’s got to be no one more thankful in all of Canuck-Land than Kyle Wellwood, who finally got his first goal after some close calls, including having credit for the Canucks third goal of the game assigned to Glass and missing on an empty net opportunity. Wellwood’s been playing solid defensively, although for someone who is being looked at to provide offense, playing well defensively isn’t enough to justify taking a spot up on the roster. So, good for Wellwood for finally breaking his drought.

Another player who I thought had a really solid game was Ryan Johnson. He had a really solid game, playing well positionally and logging 3:58 on the PK. His faceoffs were still brutal (30%), but it looks like he’s starting to come into his own as well.

Other highlights to the game included John Garrett doing a horrible Ed Whalen impersonation (”A MALFUNCTION AT THE JUNCTION”), which I loved and hated. Loved it, because even though Whalen was the Flames’ broadcaster, he was one of the best in the business and made listening to hockey games an absolute treat. Hated it, because you didn’t think that Garrett’s voice could get anymore nasally or screechy, yet here you go. You really didn’t need to trot that voice out, John!

Also? Roberto Luongo has the post game quote of the year: “It’s hard to concentrate, there’s a couple making out by the glass. I don’t know what’s going on.”

Canucks play Edmonton on Saturday and San Jose Sunday. Oilers play the Sharks tomorrow, so hopefully the Oil will get to bear the brunt of a Sharks team looking to put an ugly game behind them.
